After writing quite a few articles on wedding flowers, I decided to do a little research on why some brides would consider using faux flowers instead of fresh ones.

I was a little surprised to find that most people think there is a huge price difference. That is only true if inexpensive faux flowers are an option. Inexpensive faux flowers look like "fake flowers" and I can't imagine anyone wanting a bouquet that looks cheap.

Before you think I am completely against faux flowers I should tell you that I do have an arrangement of "soft touch" faux flowers in my home. It is a combination of white Casablanca lilies and hydrangea and is quiet lovely.

Another exception is the NDI floral company located in Alabama. They have the most realistic and expensive faux flowers on the market but to my knowledge they do not do wedding flowers. The stems are sold in some stores though.

I would not hesitate to use the soft touch flowers in a wedding bouquet especially if allergies are a concern. Most people are not allergic to greenery so I would use as much fresh greenery as possible mixed in with the faux flowers to add to the realistic look.

Some of the brides commented that faux flowers made a DIY wedding possible and that is true. The caveat here is that it is also possible and easy to learn how to DIY with fresh flowers. There are how to books that make floral design easy.

Anyone can get a mini course on DIY wedding flowers and after a little practice be able to create amazing bouquets and centerpieces. The key is to practice and have enough friends to help. It can be hard work, but rewarding not to mention saving a fortune.

If you want to give a gift to a group of friends that will last a lifetime and also be passed from one generation to another, I can't think of anything more special than learning how to arrange flowers.

Many girls learn the art of embroidery, quilting, and cooking from Moms and Grandmothers and continue to pass it on to their children. I would love to see the art of flower design passed on as well.

If you stop and think of the many ways we would use floral design if we only knew how, it might surprise you. My personal story began when I tried to create an arrangement from flowers purchased at a grocery store. No matter which vase I used or how I tried to get them in that vase, they still looked like I just threw them together.

I'm a very visual person and my frustration and love for flowers sent me to my local florist not to purchase but to learn how to design. I loved it so much that I became a designer then a manager and then started my own business. It didn't take long to learn how exhausting and time consuming the business is. My love for design diminished because it became work instead of pleasure. The business side outweighed the art.

I practiced floral design for four years (the equivalent of a college degree) and I am grateful for the experience and to have learned how to create any floral design piece I desire. Now my love for floral design has returned and I simply enjoy sharing my knowledge with others so they can enjoy and pass it on.

One of the great benefits of learning the art is that your home can be filled with elegant floral designs for every occasion. Holidays are excuses to go all out and create a showplace to celebrate the season.

But the greatest reward of all is giving back and helping people who really need a break.
